A small, under 300 student magnet school in Jersey City was ranked by US News & World Report as the top middle school in New Jersey on Tuesday.  The Infinity Institute on Mercer Street, which serves grades 6 through 12, received the honor.

Infinity Institute, a public school which requires applicants to take a special assessment in order to gain admission, received the highest score out of the 708 New Jersey schools ranked by the publication.

U.S. News & World Report’s scoring system uses the following criteria in its ranking: half of every school’s ranking is based on the number of students who score at or above their grade level proficiency on New Jersey’s state reading and math exams. The remainder of the score is based on how well a school does compared to U.S. News’ prediction after students’ income and race are taken into consideration.

The only other Hudson County school to rank in the top twenty middle schools in US News’ survey was Union City’s Sara M. Gilmore Academy.
