Saturday’s Fatal Union City Fire Under Arson Investigation

Saturday afternoon’s tragic fire in Union City claimed the life of a female senior citizen and displaced 22 individuals.  The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force, North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue, and the Union City Police Department are investigating the inferno that began at approximately 3:45 p.m.

According to the Office of Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello, the Union City Police Department was notified of a fire in the area of Bergen Turnpike and 38th Street.  Upon arrival, first responders located the fire involving 3808 through 3812 Bergen Turnpike.

During suppression activities, firefighters found a deceased individual, tentatively identified as a 74-year-old female, within a residence at 3808 Bergen Turnpike.

The Office of Union City Mayor Brian Stack is collecting monetary donations in order to assist the affected families.  Anyone who is willing and able to contribute, is asked to make checks payable to Union City Fire Victims, and mail them or bring them to, Mayor’s Office, 3rd Floor, City Hall, 3715 Palisade Avenue, Union City, New Jersey 07087.  Any amount is greatly appreciated.

As of Sunday morning, the Prosecutor’s Office had not released the name of the victim.

This matter remains under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force, North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue, and the Union City Police Department.
