Hoboken City Council moved with unusual speed Wednesday night, voting unanimously to begin repealing outdoor amplified sound permitting ordinance J-70 on first reading in an emergency measure aimed at heading off potential litigation.

Council members approved both the emergency resolution and the ordinance repeal simultaneously. The clerk called the roll, and every member present voted in favor:

Why the Rush

Officials cited “potential litigation and working collaboration with the potential business owner” as the driving force. The repeal targets J-70 specifically, which governed amplified-sound permits for certain zones. Other noise and permitting rules under Chapter 133 remain in effect.

The action came during the September 16, 2026 regular meeting and was handled as new business before the council turned to memorials and administrative matters.
