Coastal Flood Warning for Hudson County through Sunday as Hoboken closes waterfront parks

HUDSON COUNTY — A Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect for Hudson County through 6 p.m. Sunday as Hoboken closes its Hudson River waterfront walkway and several parks for much of the weekend, according to the National Weather Service and city notices reported by Patch.

The National Weather Service in New York upgraded and expanded a Coastal Flood Warning covering Hudson County, along with eastern Bergen, Essex and Union counties, until 6 p.m. EDT Sunday, in a Coastal Hazard Message issued at 4:44 p.m. Friday. NWS said 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground level is expected in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline, with the highest water levels likely during Saturday morning and possibly Sunday morning high tides.

Minor to moderate flooding is expected in the most vulnerable waterfront locations, NWS said, with shallow flooding possible on some roads and low-lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns and basements near the waterfront.

Hoboken will close the waterfront walkway along the Hudson River from 6 a.m. Saturday through noon Sunday, according to city information reported by Patch. Pier A Park, Pier C, Sinatra Park and Maxwell Park will also be closed during that period, Patch reported. Sinatra Drive between Fourth Street and Sinatra Drive North may be closed to traffic by Hoboken police when needed, the city said via Patch.

In Jersey City, Mayor James Solomon said the city activated storm response operations, according to a city statement reported by Patch. The city said it is alerting residents through Alert JC and maintaining a line for residents to report clogged catch basins so the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority can respond before street flooding develops, Patch reported.

A separate Wind Advisory remains in effect for Hudson County until 6 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service New York Non-Precipitation Weather Message. NWS said sustained northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected in the Hudson County area, with gusts of 35 to 40 mph and locally higher.

This coastal flood coverage is separate from Hoboken’s limited boil-water advisory issued Friday after a water main break, which Hudson TV has reported separately.
