JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Nine empty Conrail freight cars left the tracks Thursday night on Conrail property near the west end of 10th Street downtown, close to the intersection of 10th and Brunswick streets, according to the railroad and city alerts.
No injuries were reported. Conrail said the derailed cars remained intact, carried no hazardous materials, and released no cargo. The railroad also said no locomotives derailed and that no public roads or rail crossings were affected.
Alert JC told residents there was no threat to the public. Conrail crews, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, and Jersey City Public Safety personnel were on scene early Friday to manage recovery, according to city and mayoral statements. Jersey City Police were also reported assisting.
Mayor James Solomon said he had been briefed and thanked law enforcement for a quick response.
“Thankfully, there are no injuries or any threat to the public. I am grateful to law enforcement for responding quickly and effectively,” Solomon said in a statement Thursday night. “The Turnpike Authority, Conrail, and our Public Safety team remain on site to direct the recovery. We will provide more updates when they are available.”
Conrail said the cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
Hudson TV will update this report as recovery continues and officials release further information.
