With President Trump declaring a national state of emergency on Friday due to the continued spread of the COVID-19 virus, and Hudson County officials fearing the likelihood that things will get worse before getting better, additional closures, cancellations and changes have been announced by Hudson County municipalities and state officials.

Hours following the President’s declaration, New Jersey announced the number of coronavirus cases in the state had jumped from 29 to 50, with both Hoboken and Jersey City officials each stating they had their first, presumptive positive tests for  COVID-19.

On Friday evening, Governor Phil Murphy and the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission announced extended expiration dates for driver’s licenses, registrations and inspection stickers due to the coronavirus outbreak.  Effective immediately, the NJMVC is granting a two-month extension for licenses, registrations and inspection stickers which are due to expire during the months of March, April and May.  The new deadlines are in the months of May, June and July respectively.  The Motor Vehicle Commission continues to encourage people to use online transactions whenever possible by visiting NJMVC.gov.

In addition to the previously announced public school closures across Hudson County, the county’s private schools have also made closure announcements.  Marist High School in Bayonne, which will permanently be shutting down this summer, is closed through March 27, as is St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City.  Hudson Catholic will be closed through at least March 20, while St. Dominic Academy is closing its doors until April 1.

Kearny schools are expected to make an announcement on their plans today, Saturday, March 14.

Many public school districts across Hudson County are saying they will continue to provide free or reduced breakfast and lunches to students through next week, even though their on site classes have been switched to home instruction.  Parents have been told to pick up the meals at various school buildings within individual districts.

All four of Hudson County’s St. Patrick’s Day parades have been cancelled or postponed, and Jersey City announced on Friday that all non-criminal, municipal court cases scheduled for the Summit Avenue venue between March 16 and 20 have been adjourned.  People will receive new court dates in the mail.

Hoboken also announced that all library facilities in the city are shut down from March 16 through March 30.

  1. Oh nice, how about us that are still being exposed at work with people coughing all over the place? This is ridiculous and completely unfair i live with fear everyday thinking I might be infected at worked with this disease I live in west new york were a person was already infected. And my bosses dont give a dam about us, and all of a sudden barely show up now, since they started hearing how serious this is. We have no choice but to show up to work because bills have to get paid meanwhile bosses are in their nice mansions and have absolutely nothing to worry about. We have ran out of disinfecting wipes and sanitzers and work in a home health aide company where this aides work with pts who are ill, how can we be so sure that they havnt been exposed? We are all at risk. This will only get worse if are obligated to work and People spreading their germs all over. This can be prevented if all persons were required to stay home for atleast 2weeks and if possible work from home. Please hear us out we are all terrified at work.l want to stay anonymous because i dont want to lose my job and my bosses are pigs and will lie just to make themselves look good.
