Bayonne BOE: 9 Candidates for 3 Seats in November Election

When Bayonne residents go to the polls in November to cast ballots, assuming the General Election is not switched to another Vote by Mail affair by Governor Phil Murphy due to COVID-19, they will find nine candidates running for three, Board of Education seats.

The candidates are current Board President Maria Valado, Vice President Christopher Munoz, and newcomer David Watson.  They are running as a team under the slogan Together We Can.   The City Council and Mayor Jimmy Davis normally support the slate under this slogan.

Current Board Trustee Michael Alonso has filed for re-election, and will have as running mates fellow Republicans Charles Shepard and Michael Shatravka.  Alonso found himself in hot water a few months ago after posting controversial Facebook posts following the George Floyd incident in Minnesota and subsequent protests around the country.  The trio is running under the slogan Make Bayonne Great Again.

Former Board of Education Trustee Charles Ryan, who served as a Captain in the city Police Department, has filed petitions in the hope of returning to the Board.

Also running in the November 3rd election are independents Andrew Kim and Denis Wilbeck, Jr., whose father is currently a Board member and a former Board Vice President.
