Bayonne Car Burglary Leads to Police Chase, Ending in Newark With Suspects Escaping

A search for suspects involved in a Bayonne car burglary, which led to a police pursuit ending in Newark with the suspects fleeing on Tuesday, is actively being investigated according to Bayonne Police Captain Eric Amato.

According to Captain Amato, a Bayonne officer driving in the area of 49th Street and Avenue E shortly before 1 o’clock in the afternoon, observed a male burglarizing a parked vehicle.   There were two other individuals seated inside a nearby vehicle belonging to the actors.  As the officer attempted to confront and arrest the person burglarizing the parked vehicle, a struggle ensued.

Captain Amato says the man, now assisted by a second person from the suspect vehicle, was able to break free and all three actors involved fled the scene in their vehicle, but not before crashing into a parked vehicle and a marked police vehicle.

As responding officers attempted to stop the suspect vehicle, the driver of the vehicle refused to comply and initiated a motor vehicle pursuit which ended in Newark.  The actors abandoned the vehicle in Newark and fled the area.  Police are currently searching for the suspects.

Amato says the officer involved in the struggle suffered minor injuries to his hand.  The officer operating the police vehicle that was struck by the suspect vehicle as it fled the scene, suffered a hand injury as well.  The incident remains under investigation.

Once captured, the actors involved are facing charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and eluding police.
