40-year old Riney R. Smith of Fulton Avenue in Jersey City has been arrested for having a loaded, multi-magazine handgun in his possession. According to Bayonne Captain Eric Amato, Smith was taken into custody at 11:36 last night in the area of 185 East 22nd Street.
According to Amato, officers responded to the area after receiving a report of a man asleep in a vehicle with a handgun in plain view on the front, passenger seat. Upon arrival, police located the vehicle in question and discovered the driver, who was later identified as Smith, asleep in the driver seat with a gun clearly visible resting on the front passenger seat.
Officers were able to safely wake Smith and recover the loaded 9mm handgun, which was equipped with a large capacity magazine. A search of the vehicle also led to the recovery of heroin.
Smith was placed under arrest and a search incident to his arrest led to the recovery of marijuana from Smith’s person.
He is charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a high capacity magazine, plus possession of heroin, a controlled dangerous substance, and certain persons not to possess a weapon.
