Bayonne Sidewalk Sales Set for July Through Early September
At its meeting on June 16, the Bayonne City Council passed a resolution allowing merchants to sell merchandise on the sidewalks in front of their stores every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from Thursday, July 8, through Saturday, September 4. This policy allows stores in Bayonne to have sidewalk sales in all commercial zones. The Council adopted a similar resolution supported by Mayor Jimmy Davis in 2020.
A Bayonne ordinance sets aside the third Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of July for sidewalk sales. The City Council resolution expanded the dates available for those sales this year. The reason for expanding the sidewalk sales from one week to nine is to boost the local retail trade, which had been curtailed by New Jersey’s Coronavirus Public Health Emergency. The resolution passed on June 16 stated, “The COVID-19 crisis severely restricted Bayonne’s merchants from conducting business in their normal fashion.” City officials wanted to find additional means to improve local economic activity. The new resolution was passed for that reason.
Mayor Davis said, “I would like to thank the City Council for supporting the Administration’s proposal for expanding sidewalk sales for the second consecutive year. These sales will boost trade for local merchants and provide additional shopping opportunities for Bayonne consumers.” Mayor Davis continued, “I would like to encourage Bayonne shoppers to support local businesses by patronizing the sidewalk sales and enjoying food at hometown restaurants.”
