Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of Alexis Cottrell-Nelson, a 23-year-old Bayonne resident, on the charge of receiving stolen property. The arrest was the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Jason Love.
On March 3, 2023, detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotic Task Force conducted a traffic stop of a suspected stolen vehicle traveling through Bergen County. The detectives determined that it was a “re-VIN” stolen vehicle. A “re-VIN” vehicle is a vehicle that has had its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) changed, removed or altered to conceal its true identity. In this case, the VIN affixed to the vehicle did not coincide with the paperwork provided to detectives. After a quick investigation, detectives confirmed that the vehicle was reported stolen from Miami, FL on September 25, 2022, and the driver of the stolen vehicle was identified as Alexis Cottrell-Nelson.
As a result of the investigation, Alexis Cottrell-Nelson was arrested at the scene on Friday, March 3, 2023, and charged with third-degree receiving stolen property, N.J.S.A. 2C:20-7a. She was released on her own recognizance pending a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, NJ.
Prosecutor Musella reminds the public that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
