BAYONNE, NJ – A 63-year-old female crossing guard was hit by a motor vehicle earlier today at the intersection of West 56th Street and Avenue C, according to a statement from Eric Amato of the Bayonne Police Department.
The incident occurred just before 8:30 a.m. as the crossing guard was making her way to the sidewalk after ensuring the safety of school children crossing the street. A 4-door white sedan, driven by a male, made a left turn onto Avenue C from West 56th Street. As the car entered the crosswalk, it collided with the crossing guard, causing her to be thrown onto the hood of the vehicle and subsequently onto the street.
The driver, showing initial concern, stopped his vehicle and helped the injured crossing guard to the sidewalk. However, in a surprising turn of events, he left the scene in the direction of Jersey City without providing any personal details or waiting for authorities. As of now, there is limited information available about the driver and the vehicle.
The victim reported pain in her back following the incident and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Fortunately, no children were in the street when the crash occurred, ensuring their safety.
The Bayonne Police Department is actively investigating the incident and urges anyone with information about the driver or the vehicle to come forward. The community is reminded of the importance of road safety and the role each individual plays in ensuring the well-being of all residents.
