UPDATED: Overnight Murder in Jersey City, Victim Identified

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez tweeted at 5:37 on Saturday morning that the Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating a fatal shooting which took place shortly past 4 o’clock this morning.  The shooting occurred in the area of Grant Avenue and MLK Drive in Jersey City.

One man was killed in the incident.

A few minutes before 1:30 this afternoon, Prosecutor Suarez released the following, additional information pertaining to this morning’s fatality:

Shortly after 4:00 a.m., a patrol unit of the Jersey City Police Department responded to the area of Grant Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive in Jersey City after hearing gunshots. The responding Police Officers found a male victim with a gunshot wound to the torso. The male, later identified as Ishamell McCany, age 41, of Jersey City, was transported by Emergency Medical Services to the Jersey City Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at approximately 4:20 a.m. The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit is actively investigating this case with assistance from the Jersey City Police Department. No arrests have been made at this time.
