Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello announced this afternoon that the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit has arrested a driver in connection with a hit-and-run collision that seriously injured a pedestrian in Union City on Saturday, February 22, 2025.
56-year old Carlos Mejia of Union City has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Crash Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, Endangering an Injured Victim, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (vehicle), Aggravated Assault (domestic violence), Assault by Auto, and Obstruction. Mello says he was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, and taken to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.
According to a press release from the Prosecutor’s Office, “shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2025, the Union City Police Department was notified of a pedestrian struck on 17th Street in the area of Bergenline Avenue. Responding officers located a female victim — later identified as a 32-year-old Union City resident — with serious injuries. The striking vehicle did not remain at the scene. During the course of the investigation, Mejia was identified as the driver of a Ford E450 that struck the victim.”
Mello credited the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit with the investigation and arrest, with assistance from the Union City Police Department.
The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
