Hoboken Tables $2.2M Parking Utility Bond 8-1 After Voting Blind Fight

Hoboken City Council on Sept. 16 tabled the $2.2 million Parking Utility bond 8-1 after a council member blasted the lack of any formal presentation on a $500,000 curbside study the city already paid for.

The move came during the regular council meeting when the member questioned why the council was being asked to approve funding for cameras, loading zones and enforcement tools without seeing the results of work completed one to two years ago by the Hoboken Parking Utility.

“We paid $500,000 for a curbside study. We did not get a formal presentation from the HPU. I don’t understand why we are bonding for something… when we haven’t had a formal presentation on a $500,000 study we did.”

Study Promised, Never Delivered

The member noted that former Director Sharp had pledged a presentation before leaving and that the prior administration even requested extra funds to extend the project. “Here we are a year, year and a half… and this council has not had a formal presentation yet,” the member said.

Without the study details, the member said the council was effectively “voting blind” on infrastructure that could include cameras and loading-zone enforcement.

Vote Result

The motion to table passed 8-1. Voting yes: Phil Cohen, Steve Firestone, Tiffanie Fisher, Diane Imus, Caitlin Layson, Paul Presinzano, Michael Russo, and Ruben Ramos Jr. The lone no vote was Joe Quintero. The $2.2 million bond was postponed until the Parking Utility presents the curbside study to the council.
