Hoboken Mayor Seeks Public's Input on Housing Authority Redevelopment Plan Survey

Mayor Ravi Bhalla is encouraging residents to take the online survey and provide input for the creation of a Hoboken Housing Authority Redevelopment Plan. The plan is the next step towards implementing the vision and roadmap for redevelopment that was initially established by the Hoboken Housing Forward Strategic Plan, which was adopted in April 2022 by the Hoboken Housing Authority Board of Commissioners.

The Redevelopment Plan will allow the City to implement new land use and infrastructure requirements that will guide future development and allow the Hoboken Housing Authority (HHA) properties to be redeveloped or substantially rehabilitated through a phased approach without displacing current residents.

Over the next several months, the City and its consultant team will be working closely with residents and stakeholders to develop several redevelopment scenarios and choose a preferred option that benefits residents, is financially feasible, and will achieve support from the City, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and HHA.

“We are working hand in hand with the Hoboken Housing Authority to ensure we help bring to life the community’s vision for a new Hoboken Housing Authority campus,” said Mayor Bhalla. “I encourage all Hoboken community members to complete the online survey so we can create a plan that will permit much-needed upgrades to existing units and provide for additional units to help avoid resident displacement.”

The Hoboken Housing Authority, overseen by the Hoboken Housing Authority Board of Commissioners and HUD, consists of six housing complexes over nearly 22 acres comprised of 1,354 housing units. The HHA properties were originally constructed between 1940 and 1979.

This redevelopment planning process is a collaborative effort between the City of Hoboken and HHA following the Hoboken City Council’s designation of the HHA properties as an Area in Need of Redevelopment on Nov. 14, 2022.

Paper copies of the survey are available at the City Clerk’s Office in Hoboken City Hall at 94 Washington Street and through the Hoboken Housing Authority Resident Services Department at 400 Harrison Street. 

The City will use input gathered from previous planning efforts, the March 22 community meeting, ongoing stakeholder meetings, and the live survey to create draft concept redevelopment scenarios to present to the public this summer. Following further community feedback, the City will seek to present a final redevelopment plan to the Hoboken City Council for approval by the end of the year.
