UPDATE: Hudson Prosecutor: Child Dies In Overnight Bayonne Fire

THIS STORY CONTAINS NEW INFORMATION                                                                                                                                                                                          Tragic news to report coming out of Bayonne.  In a statement early this morning, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office reported that a child has died in a fire overnight in Bayonne.

The brief message says, “The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Bayonne Fire Department are investigating a fire on Avenue C with one juvenile fatality.  More to follow.”

Shortly before 2 o’clock this afternoon, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez reported that just after 11:40 p.m last night., the Bayonne Fire Department responded to a working fire at 438 Avenue C.  Emergency responders found heavy fire and smoke throughout the two-story building.  During suppression efforts, firefighters located an unresponsive juvenile – later identified as 6-year old Saniya Felton of Bayonne – on the second floor of the building.  The female victim was transported to the Bayonne Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 1 a.m. on Monday, July 1, 2024.

Suarez sats the cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Bayonne Fire Department.  Foul play is not suspected at this time.

The Bayonne Office of Emergency Management posted video around midnight this morning of a fire raging in a building at Avenue C and 18th Street.
