Injured Victim Files Lawsuit against Councilwoman DeGise and Jersey City Over Hit-and-Run Incident

The victim involved in a hit-and-run incident caused by Councilwoman Amy DeGise in Jersey City nearly one year ago has taken legal action. The injured individual, Andrew Black, has filed a lawsuit against both the councilwoman and the city, seeking compensation for the damages they sustained.

The lawsuit, which names both the councilwoman and the city of Jersey City, including the remainder of the City Council and Mayor Steven Fulop as defendants, seeks financial restitution to cover medical expenses, pain and suffering, and any other losses incurred.  Black, a food delivery cyclist, was struck by Councilwoman’s DeGise’s SUV and sent hard to the pavement.  DeGise did not stop, leaving the scene, before finally reporting to police hours later.

Black had cycled through a red light before being hit by DeGise’s vehicle.

Hit-and-run incidents are particularly distressing, leaving victims physically and emotionally scarred. The decision to pursue legal recourse is often driven by the need for justice and to obtain compensation for the hardships endured.

It is crucial to recognize that legal proceedings involving public figures can garner significant attention, which this case certainly has, and the outcome of this lawsuit may have implications for both the councilwoman’s career and the reputation of Jersey City.

Less than four weeks following the incident, Black filed a $1-million tort claim. against the Councilwoman.

Back in January, DeGise pleaded guilty in court over the incident.  The court hit her with a one-year driver’s licenses suspension plus a $5,000 fine.
