The Jersey City Board of Education held a special meeting on Monday night to consider candidates for the interim Superintendent of Schools position. Superintendent of Schools Franklin Walker retired at the end of December.
After going into closed session for 75 minutes, the Board nominated and selected Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Norma Fernandez, to be the interim Superintendent of Schools from January 1, 2022, retroactive through June 30, 2023.
Dr. Fernandez’s appointment is for a minimum period of six months with a 30 day notice of termination thereafter. No other nominations were made. Dr. Fernandez has worked in the Jersey City Public School District for 40 years.
The Jersey City Board of Education will now conduct a national search for a permanent Superintendent of Schools after establishing a search committee.
