Jersey Avenue at the Jersey City-Hoboken border was still closed to traffic at noon Friday while Veolia crews repaired a 20-inch water main that the company says was damaged during construction work early Friday, Oct. 16.
In a 12 p.m. update on X, Veolia Water New Jersey said the main “has been isolated” and that water pressure “is stabilizing.” The company said “Jersey City residents adjacent to repair site may experience service interruption until work is completed,” and that the road “remains closed to traffic.”
Veolia first reported the problem at 6:28 a.m., saying crews were working to isolate “a 20” main damaged during construction work on Jersey Ave, near Hoboken” and that customers might see low water pressure. At 10:32 a.m. it said repairs were continuing and Jersey City customers might still have low pressure.
At 5:43 a.m., Hoboken’s Office of Emergency Management said Jersey Avenue was closed in both directions. It said Henderson Street and Grove Street were open for drivers leaving Hoboken, but Grove was closed coming into the city, and it advised drivers to use northern routes into and out of Hoboken or leave extra time.
As of noon, Veolia’s posts did not say when the main would be repaired or the road reopened, how many customers are affected, or who was doing the construction work. None of the posts from Veolia or Hoboken OEM reviewed by Hudson TV mentioned a boil-water advisory.
Separately, the National Weather Service in New York said at 11:08 a.m. there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms late Friday afternoon into the evening, mainly with damaging wind gusts. NJ Transit warned riders of possible severe storms and high winds during the evening commute.
Hudson TV will update this story as Veolia and city officials release more information.
