The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit has arrested a 26-year-old man after a gas station employee died as a result of injuries he sustained during an assault in Jersey City last year. According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, Jersey City resident Nixon Marquez is charged with murder, a crime of the first degree.
Suarez says he was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.
On Sunday, August 21, 2022, at approximately 2:48 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department responded to the Shell gas station located on the corner of Marin Boulevard and 14th Street on reports of an assault.
Responding officers found a male victim – later identified as 55-year old Fardin Ghadamidarounkola of Jersey City – with a serious head injury. He was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment. On Monday, May 15, 2023, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office was notified Ghadamidarounkola died at a Washington, D.C. hospital on Saturday, May 13, 2023.
Prosecutor Suarez says the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be complications due to blunt force trauma to the head and the manner of death to be homicide.
Marquez had previously been charged with assault and weapons offenses relating to this matter. Charges were upgraded following the report by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
