Major Renovations Planned For 46th Street Park in North Bergen

The North Bergen Board of Commissioners have introduced an ordinance to appropriate $500,000 in New Jersey Green Acres funds to completely renovate the 46th Street Park.  The site currently has a baseball/softball field, a parking lot, dog run and basketball court.  It sits on a hill.

During Wednesday’s Board of Commissioners’ meeting, some residents questioned removing a small area of the park which children use to play catch or frisbee, and sled down during winter snow, in favor of more parking spaces.

However, not all residents are opposed to removing that small section of green grass which the Commissioners say the town has trouble growing, in favor of additional parking.

According to town officials, the area which would be converted into additional parking already sees cars parking on it during games, so providing a regular parking lot makes sense.

The renovation would cause the loss of some trees, but according to Parks and Public Property Commissioner Hugo Cabrera, more trees would be planted than will be removed.

The second and final hearing on the proposed ordinance is set to take place on July 13 at 11 am.

The Commissioners also introduced an ordinance to switch from parallel parking to angled parking on the eastern side of Bergenline Avenue, between 71st to 79th Streets.  The switch would add 44 additional parking spaces along Bergenline.  A second reading will take place on July 13th.
