Photo Credit: facebook.com Michael Alonso, a former Bayonne Board of Education Trustee who lost a re-election bid two years ago, has announced his intention to run for Mayor in the upcoming May election. TAPintoBayonne was the first to report the news.
Alonso becomes the third candidate to publicly announce a mayoral bid, joining incumbent Mayor Jimmy Davis, who is seeking a third term, and Council President Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski.
A registered Republican employed as a real estate agent, Alonso was elected to the Bayonne Board of Education in 2017, but lost his bid for a second term in 2020. He came under controversy after posting remarks on his Facebook page following the George Floyd murder in Minneapolis two years ago, which some people took as racist in nature.
Alonso previously was a candidate for the New Jersey Assembly in the 31st District.
