National Night Out celebrations draw crowds in West New York and Union City

From a chance to meet elected officials and first responders to free giveaways and a lot of tasty treats—West New York’s annual National Night Out against crime event in Miller Park on August 5th offered something for everyone.

Traditionally held on the first Tuesday in August in communities around the country, National Night Out is designed to promote positive relationships between residents and law enforcement to help make neighborhoods safer.

“It’s important that the people see their police officers and the relationship improves as they meet them,” said West New York Mayor Albio Sires.

“I think it shows the community that officers are somebody you can come to and we want to interact with the children and the residents because it’s a good way to strengthen the bond with the community,” said West New York Police Captain Monica Ramos.

This year’s event featured an obstacle course for younger members of the community–courtesy of D.A.R.E.–to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving.

Food Bazaar also set up a booth, handing out select grocery items and officials from North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue were on hand promoting fire safety, as they gear up for Fire Prevention Month in October.

“It’s just good to get out in the community, talk about fire safety and see the kids,” said North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Captain Ernesto Camejo. “We love seeing the kids when the fire department drives around. It’s a good time to stand with the community and give back.”

In Union City, New York Avenue was transformed into every child’s dream amusement park, complete with bungee jumping and a scaled down version of bull riding.

Joe, a Union City resident brought his family. He said they planned to take advantage of a variety of the attractions and of course some of the free food, including the ices.

“We want the kids to feel entertained and to have a reason to play out tonight and have a good time,” said Union City Commissioner Maryury Martinetti.
