The actions of a New Jersey Department of Corrections officer caught on tape mocking the death of George Floyd during a Black Lives Matter protest march on Monday, have resulted in his suspension.

The incident happened in Franklinville, which is an unincorporated section of Franklin Township, located in Gloucester County.

The corrections officer, identified on social media as Joseph DeMarco, is seen with a group of individuals in front of a President Trump sign, taunting the protesters as they march down the street.  Captured on a cell phone, you can see DeMarco, whose identity has not been confirmed by the New Jersey Department of Corrections, kneeling down with his knee on the back of another person’s neck, clearly mocking the way in which George Floyd was murdered by then-Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin.  Chauvin, and the three other former officers involved in Floyd’s death, all are facing murder charges.

Another one of the taunters from Monday’s incident has been fired by his employer, FedEx, for his participation in the incident.

Governor Phil Murphy has expressed his outrage at the Monday incident involving the suspended corrections officer.  In a Tweet last night, the Governor said, “Mocking George Floyd’s murder in effort to belittle the calls for justice from our Black and Brown communities is repugnant.  I condemn this behavior in the strongest terms possible.”

The New Jersey Corrections Department has confirmed that a senior corrections officer from Bayside State Prison was a participant in the Franklinville taunting, but they have yet to confirm his identity as being DeMarco.

Meanwhile, a joint statement by the Franklin Township Police Department and the Mayor says the incident is under investigation.
