North Bergen officials have announced plans to upgrade West Side Avenue, one of the most heavily used roadways in the township.  Everything from flood mitigation to new sidewalks and curbs, a new traffic light, and of course repaving the length of the thoroughfare is just beginning.

According to Mayor Nicholas Sacco, the project is being paid for using a $9-million grant  from the state which was obtained several years ago through the efforts of then-Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto.

North Bergen Public Works Department Superintendent John Shaw says the project will greatly improve the safety of the roadway, which is probably, aside from Tonnelle Avenue Route 1 & 9, the most heavily used thoroughfare in the municipality, bringing both cars and trucks to the many warehouses which line the street, as well as the shopping centers from 69th Street northward along Tonnelle Avenue.

Shaw says the project is expected to be completed before September.
