North Bergen Senior Nutrition Center Has Re-Opened Following Pandemic

North Bergen’s Senior Nutrition Center has re-opened after a long hiatus because of the COVID pandemic.  The center is now open five days a week for three hours in the morning, and the township’s senior citizens couldn’t be happier.

Closed since March, 16, 2020, the center still provided seniors with food through the Meals on Wheels program, but they could not come to the center to enjoy time with friends, bingo, exercise classes, movies and other traditions which kept them active and social.

That’s all changed, however, since Mayor Nicholas Sacco and the Board of Commissioners authorized the re-opening on Tuesday.  Seniors need to call the day before to let the center know they plan to attend the next day.  All they have to do is call (201) 392-2157.   If they need the township’s senior shuttle bus, they should call North Bergen transportation, and they will pick them up.

Ana Maria Castello, the center’s coordinator, says seating is limited for the time-being, but having the seniors back at the center is a joy.  Over the past year, the center Face Timed with the seniors, but it just wasn’t the same.  And Castello adds that one of the favorite activities, Bingo, will return on June 9 with limited seating.

The center is free for North Bergen seniors,  The hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am until 12-noon.
