All of the students at the Polk Street School in North Bergen came to America from another country, some as recently as a few months ago. That fact made studying Black History Month in English a major challenge, especially because each 5th grade student had to research and present their projects in English as part of the school’s Wax Museum project.
On Wednesday, Hudson TV visited the school and saw the finished products created by the fifth graders. The students dressed like the famous African Americans they researched.

This was a great way for the students to become more comfortable with the English language. Some of students have only been in the United States for a short time period. Doing this Black History Month exercise in a language which was not their own, helped them learn the language and the history of the person they researched.
