The construction of Union City’s new middle school on 37th Street is continuing on schedule.
The approximately $80-million school, which will house 7th, 8th and 9th graders beginning in September 2025, is being paid for with New Jersey School Development Authority funding. The school, located between Bergenline Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard, will help ease overcrowding at Union City High School. It, along with Union Hill and Emerson Middle Schools will be a part of a district restructuring plan.

On Tuesday morning, school officials, SDA officials and students participated in a beam signing. The signed steel beam will become part of the building’s structure, permanently memorializing everyone’s participation in the construction process.
Superintendent of Schools Silvia Abbato says between 700 and 800 students will attend classes at the new school. There is parking for staff on the ground level, along with the new municipal garage on 36th Street.
