Tragic news coming out of Jersey City last night, as the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department are investigating a fatal fire that occurred shortly before 9 pm in a multi-story apartment building.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello, at approximately, 8:45 p.m. on January 27, 2026, the Jersey City Fire Department was notified of a smoke condition at 11 College Drive. When first responders arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from a fifth floor unit of the five story building. During suppression activities, firefighters located an unresponsive female, later identified as 85-year old Maxine Sullivan of Jersey City. She was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 10 p.m.
The fire is under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department. The fire does not appear to be suspicious at this time.
