Prosecutor: 3 Charged In Connection With Fatal Bayonne Shooting Last Year

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit has charged three individuals in connection with the shooting death of 23-year old Damoi Davauni Campbell in Bayonne on July 27, 2022.   According to Prosecutor Esther Suarez, 22-year old, Salem, New Jersey resident Mitchell Watson is charged with murder and accomplice liability; conspiracy to commit murder; two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, a handgun; and two counts of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose (the handgun).

According to Prosecutor Suarez, Campbell was arrested in Salem, New Jersey, on Thursday, June 29, 2023.   He is currently being held at the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny pending his first court appearance.

Also under arrest is 20-year old Hafis Jackson, also of Salem.  Jackson has been charged with murder and accomplice liability; conspiracy to commit murder; two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, a handgun; and two counts of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose (the handgun).  Jackson is currently in custody at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington, Delaware, on unrelated charges.

The third person charged in the Bayonne shooting is Daynajah Payne, age 24, of Irvington.  Prosecutor Suarez announced that she is charged with murder and accomplice liability; plus conspiracy to commit murder.  Payne was arrested in Long Valley, New Jersey, on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, and is being detained at the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending her first court appearance.

In a statement, Suarez said the incident on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, began “at approximately 4:27 a.m.  The Bayonne Police Department received a report of shots fired in the area of 21st Street and Avenue A. Upon arrival, responding officers found a male victim inside of a vehicle on West 21st Street, west of Avenue A.”

The victim was later identified as Campbell, a resident of New York.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Suarez says the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death was gunshot wounds to the back and the manner of death to be Homicide.  The Prosecutor credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit, the Bayonne Police Department, the United States Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, the New Jersey State Parole Board, the Salem County Prosecutor’s Office, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the New York Police Department, the Salem Police Department, the Washington Township Police Department, and the Wilmington Delaware Police Department with the investigation and arrest.
