Rifle & Shotgun Retrieved From Car Following Road Rage Incident In Secaucus

Secaucus Police arrested an East Orange man on Monday morning following a road rage incident, recovering a rifle and a shotgun during the police stop.

The incident happened at approximately 8:30 a.m.   According to Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller, it was alleged that a male operating a grey Nissan brandished a firearm magazine and threatened to shoot the other driver involved in the incident.   The scenario occurred while they were traveling eastbound on Route 3.

A press release from the Secaucus Police Department states, “Secaucus Police Officer Justin Machno observed the fleeing Nissan on Route 3 East.  Police Officer Machno, with the assistance of other patrol officers, stopped the vehicle and detained the driver and sole occupant, identified as Travon Gantt, 25, of East Orange.  After being positively identified as the man who threatened the other driver, his vehicle was searched.  During the search of Travon Gantt’s vehicle a rifle magazine loaded with 5.56 caliber rounds was located within the passenger compartment.  Additionally, a Smith and Wesson M & P Rifle and a Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun were also located, along with numerous rounds of rifle and shotgun ammunition.  Travon Gantt was then placed under arrest.”  

Chief Miller stated, “I am thankful that what could have been a volatile incident did not result in any injuries to the public or my officers.  The responding officers responded both professionally and with courage while confronting a person reported to have been armed and I am proud of them.”

Gantt has been charged with two counts of possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose and two counts of unlawful possession of rifle/shotgun.  He was transported to the Hudson County Jail.

The charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
