Protests were scheduled around New Jersey today as the COVID-19 vaccine deadline for teachers and many others arrived. Under a state mandate issued by Governor Phil Murphy, all teachers in pre-school through grade 12 in New Jersey schools, must be fully vaccinated or face mandatory COVID testing in their school districts.
A large protest began outside the State House Annex in Trenton at approximately 11 am, as teachers and other workers demonstrated against the vaccine order.
This morning’s joint rally was organized by the state’s public workers, including teachers, health care workers, first responders, and others. Those involved protested vaccine mandates, as well as mask mandates for kids. Around 1,000 protesters were in attendance.
A survey conducted this morning by Hudson TV found that none of Hudson County’s school districts was expecting teachers to demonstrate or walk out of classes in protest against the vaccination mandate.
North Bergen Superintendent of Schools Dr. George Solter told Hudson TV during a telephone interview that there are approximately 4 to 15 teachers in each school building in the district who have not been vaccinated, but they are cooperating with district officials and will be getting regular COVID tests administered by two companies hired by the Board of Education to provide the tests in the school buildings.
In Union City, the Board of Education says 83 percent of its teachers have been vaccinated. Hudson TV has learned that Union City will be making an announcement tomorrow regarding its teaching staff.
