Two Massive Fires In Union City and Weehawken Displace a Total of 37 Residents

Two huge fires raging at the same time last night had North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue firefighters, along with mutual aide companies, scrambling to save lives and property.  The cause of each fire remains under investigation, with the Arson Unit of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office leading that review.

According to NHRFR Chief David Donnarumma, the first fire, which went to five alarms,  broke out at 416 8th Street in Union City.  That blaze broke out at approximately 10:36 p.m. and resulted in 22 people being displaced after six buildings were affected by the flames.  414 and 418 8th Street, in addition to 416, suffered heavy damage.  The remaining three structures were also damaged significantly, but less so than 414, 416, and 418.

Three minutes after firefighters arrived on the scene in Union City, at approximately 10:39 p.m., firefighters received a call and responded to 207 and 209 Jane Street in Weehawken.  That blaze went to six alarms.  Chief Donnarumma said both structures were a total loss and 15 residents were displaced.  The Chief added that two neighboring buildings suffered less severe damage.

Thankfully no residents were injured in either blaze.  Three firefighters at each location did suffer minor injuries, but they were treated and released form the hospital.
