Five students from Union City’s Jose Marti STEM Academy are on their way to next month’s International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles after winning four gold and one platinum medal at last month’s STEM Showcase at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City.

The school received numerous other accolades at the showcase, including having the most students in grades five through the twelve participate, and having the highest overall score at the event.  There were also five silver medalists, two bronze medal recipients and eleven special awards given to Jose Marti STEM Academy.

Senior Claudio Martinez came away with the platinum medal for his project, Autonomous Search and Rescue Robot.  He will compete in the ISEF in Los Angeles the week of May 11th.  The four gold medal winners, senior Yara Aguilar, senior Andy Gonzalez, junior Adriana Morono and freshman Lehansa Marambage will also travel to L.A. to witness the competition, which will feature several hundred STEM student from around the globe.

The overall winner at the ISEF competition will leave Los Angeles with a $100,000 prize.

The students will also get to visit Universal Studios with the other competitors at an event closed to the public.

It’s going to be quite a trip.  Best of luck to Claudio, and congratulations to all of the Jose Marti STEM Academy showcase winners.
