It was a very special evening on Tuesday, as Union City Mayor Brian Stack and the Board of Commissioners honored Board of Education STEM Supervisor Dr. Nadia Makar on her retirement. Makar served in that role in the Science Department since August 2011.
Hundreds of students at the Jose Marti STEM Academy have benefited from Makar’s guidance and instruction throughout the years, with countless students going on to Ivy League schools and professional careers in STEM fields.

Dr. Makar was previously honored on Saturday, April 25, 2026 by receiving the Mentor of the Year Award at the MentorU Awards Ceremony. She also received a proclamation from the Council of Newark, one from the Councilwoman-at-Large of Newark, and one from the Mayor of Newark.

Dr. Makar has been the driving force behind the STEM program in Union City, and it is thanks to her that so many Union City students have achieved such great success.
Dr. Makar spent nearly 47 years working as a science teacher and STEM supervisor for the Union City Board of Education.
Congratulations on a well deserved retirement!!
