Union City Kicks Off Centennial Celebration With Fun Run

2025 is Union City’s centennial.  The celebration kicked off on Saturday morning with a 2 mile, Monastery Fun Run, a twice around the block run with the iconic, Monastery as the backdrop.

The event was free, and approximately 75 to 100 people braved the frigid temperatures to kick off the city’s 100th anniversary celebration.

              Union City was incorporated on June 1, 1925 when the towns of Union Hill and West Hoboken merged to become one.  Since then, Union City has grown to a bustling, Hispanic immigrant community with a population around 70,000.

              The city is nicknamed the “Embroidery Capital” and “Little Havana,” having the second highest concentration of Cubans off of the island, trailing only Miami.  Saturday’s fun run was the first of many events which will take place throughout the year, as the city turns 100 years old.  There will be indoor and outdoor concerts, a parade, numerous cultural happenings and the return of the Turkey Football game after Thanksgiving.
