Union City Man Shot And Killed In Paterson

33-year old, Union City resident Logan Gonzalez was shot and killed in a residence near East 21st Street and 19th Avenue in Paterson on Friday night.  According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes and the Paterson Police Department, an investigation has led to the the arrest of 46-year old, Paterson resident Alexander Gutierrez, in connection to Gonzalez’s homicide.

Gutierrez has been charged with first degree murder; unlawful possession of a handgun, a  second degree offense; and possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose, also a second degree crime.

According to Prosecutor Valdes, on Friday, February 16, 2024, at approximately 10:42 p.m., Paterson Police Department patrol units were advised by a witness that an individual was shot inside of a residence.  When police arrived on the scene, they discovered the victim, identified as Gonzalez, with a gunshot wound to his lower back. The victim was transported via ambulance to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.

According to a press release from the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, “The subsequent investigation revealed that Alexander Gutierrez possessed a revolver and shot the victim. The State will file a motion for pretrial detention against Alexander Gutierrez that will be heard by a Superior Court Judge on a future date.”

Murder has a sentencing range from a minimum of 30 years up to life imprisonment; the crimes of possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a handgun each carry a sentencing range of 5 to 10 years in State Prison.

Gutierrez is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
