During a ceremony held on Wednesday night at the William Musto Cultural Center in Union City, Salvadoran singer-songwriter Alvaro Torres was presented with the Key to the City. Beloved throughout the Hispanic community, Torres began his musical career 50 years ago.
Union City Commissioner Lucio Fernandez says the municipality doesn’t always give out special keys, but Mayor Brian Stack and his fellow Commissioners thought Torres was deserving because of his enormous popularity among the city’s Latin population.
Born in El Salvador, Torres eventually settled in the United States, living in Colorado, California and Florida. He was voted songwriter of the year in 1994 by BMI, Broadcast Music, Inc.
