US Marshals Arrest Jersey City Man Charged with Murder in Fatal Shooting of Tyreef Robinson in Virginia

A 24-year-old man has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Tyreef Robinson in Jersey City on March 4, 2023. Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez stated that Brandon Montague, of Jersey City, is being charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. Montague was arrested in Newport News, Virginia by the United States Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force in conjunction with the United States Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force on March 9, 2023. He is being held at the Newport News Jail as a fugitive from justice, pending extradition to New Jersey.

At approximately 10:10 p.m. on March 4, the Jersey City Police Department received notification of a shooting in the area of 2 Bergen Avenue. Responding officers found Robinson, a 34-year-old Jersey City resident, with an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body. Robinson was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:27 p.m. The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office later determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the torso and bilateral lower extremity and the manner to be homicide.

Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit, the United States Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, the United States Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, and the Jersey City Police Department with the investigation and arrest. The charges against Montague are accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
