WEST NEW YORK, NJ – Today, June 24, 2020, at 9:34 AM, three officers were in the area of the 500 block of 54th Street when they observed 543 54th street engulfed in flames, which then spread to adjacent buildings. The three officers (Deputy Chief De Rojas, Captain Frank Steffe, and Lieutenant Marcos Garciga) rushed into the burning buildings to quickly evacuate the residents of 529 54th Street, 543 54th Street and 545 54th Street.  North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue and Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene and responded shortly thereafter.

A Command Post was established at 54th and Bergenline Avenue. All units assisting were directed to respond to the command post. No injuries were reported. The fire was controlled and extinguished.  The Red Cross and the West New York OEM were called and responded to the scene.  All three evacuated properties suffered fire damage.

At this time, 53 people have been displaced from their homes. They were temporarily transported to The West New York Middle school, waiting to be transported to a hotel. The origin of the fire is still under investigation.
