North Bergen Honors DPW Employees For Reuniting Child With Family

The Township of North Bergen has honored two, DPW employees for reuniting a little girl with her family.  During a ceremony held in Town Hall on Wednesday, Department of Public Works employees Jesse Perez and John Roman were recognized for their heroic efforts in bringing a lost, four-year-old girl back to her family.

According to a press release, the incident occurred around Thanksgiving near 72nd Street and Bergenline Avenue.  Perez and Roman were working their route when they discovered the young child wandering alone near a busy street.  They quickly contacted the North Bergen Police Department.

The police determined that the child had managed to sneak out of her home while her mother was asleep.  Officers from the North Bergen Police Department located the family, ensuring the little girl was safely returned home.

Mayor Nicholas Sacco stated, “Jesse Perez and John Roman embody the spirit of care and community that makes North Bergen such a special place.  Their quick thinking and compassion turned what could have been a tragic situation into a story of hope and gratitude. We are proud to honor them for their actions.”

Public Works Commissioner Anthony Vainieri also commended the honorees, “This is what it means to be part of the North Bergen family. Jesse and John’s actions remind us that everyone who works for this town is vital and that our people go above and beyond every day to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.”

John Shaw, Chief of the Department of Public Works, praised their vigilance and dedication. “Our team works tirelessly to serve the residents of North Bergen, and this incident shows that their commitment goes far beyond the job description. Jesse and John didn’t just do their jobs that day—they made a difference in someone’s life.”
