A multi-alarm fire early Tuesday morning at 405 71st Street completely destroyed the residential building leaving multiple families, including several children, homeless. Thankfully, all of the residents were safely evacuated due to the swift action of the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Department, the North Bergen Police Department, and the North Bergen EMS.
North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco said, “I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all of our first responders for acting quickly and courageously to protect our residents. While the loss of this building is devastating, we are fully committed to supporting every family affected by this fire. Our team, along with community partners, will make sure they have a safe place to stay and the resources they need especially as we head into the Thanksgiving holiday.”
As of this morning, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
As we celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday this Thursday morning, the Township of North Bergen has partnered with local businesses, community organizations, charities, and North Bergen C.A.R.E.S. to make sure that all of the displaced families have housing through the weekend. The township and its partners are also providing Thanksgiving meals, clothing, toiletries, and other essential supplies.
Aimee Focaraccio, the Director of North Bergen C.A.R.E.S. stated, “Our community always rises to the occasion. These families lost everything, but they are not alone. We are working with incredible local partners to make sure they are cared for, supported, and surrounded with compassion during an already difficult time.”
North Bergen C.A.R.E.S. is coordinating donations of new or gently used clothing, toiletries, and other essential items during the coming days. Information on how residents can help will be posted on the township website and on NB C.A.R.E.S.’ social media pages.
