JERSEY CITY, N.J. — A 90-year-old Jersey City woman has been identified as the person killed in a four-alarm house fire on the city’s West Side Thursday afternoon, Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello said.

Zenaida Mojica died after firefighters responded to a blaze at 81 Boyd Ave. just after 5:10 p.m. Oct. 1, according to Mello’s statement. First responders found heavy fire coming from a single-family home. During suppression, Mojica was removed from the residence and pronounced dead a short time later, the prosecutor’s office said.

Two male residents of the home and one firefighter suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening, Mello said. Nineteen people were displaced from their residences.

Mayor James Solomon said Thursday night that the Jersey City Fire Department had brought a four-alarm fire on Boyd Avenue under control and that three civilians had been taken to Jersey City Medical Center. “Our hearts are broken for the family and the City is prepared to help them with resources however we can,” Solomon wrote.

The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force. Foul play is not suspected at this time, Mello said.

This West Side fire is separate from a two-alarm fire on Armstrong Avenue in Greenville on Sept. 30.

Hudson TV will update this story if officials release further details on the investigation or the injured.

Hudson TV asks: After a fatal four-alarm on the West Side, should Jersey City push same-evening public alerts and a JCFD/DPS briefing — or wait for a fuller written release once investigators finish?
