One person shot near Lincoln High School in Jersey City; brief lockdown lifted

JERSEY CITY — One person was shot Friday afternoon near Brinkerhoff Street and Monticello Avenue, about a block from Lincoln High School, Mayor James Solomon said, according to local reports.

In a social media update described by Hudson County View and the Jersey City Times, Solomon said he was briefed on shots fired at that location, that one person had been shot, and that the individual was alert and conscious and receiving medical care.

Solomon said Lincoln High School was briefly placed on lockdown as a precaution and that the lockdown was lifted because there was no ongoing threat, Hudson County View reported. He thanked Jersey City police for a quick response, said one individual had been detained, and said officers safely recovered three handguns.

The mayor said the investigation was in its early stages and that more information would be released at the appropriate time. “Gun violence has no place in Jersey City, especially near a school where our children and families should feel safe,” Solomon said, according to Hudson County View.

The Jersey City Times reported Solomon’s social media notice at about 4:30 p.m. Friday and described the person shot as a young man. No further details from the Jersey City Police Department were immediately available in those accounts.
