A 25-year old Maplewood, New Jersey man was arrested by Bayonne Police early on Thursday morning after leading officers on a vehicular chase, followed by a pursuit on foot.
According to Captain Eric Amato, Hakeem O. Gayle was taken into custody at 12:52 am in the area of West 47th Street. While on patrol, officers noticed the vehicle Gayle was operating traveling at a high rate of speed near Broadway and 51st Street.
According to Captain Amato, the officers pursued the vehicle, bringing it to a stop at Avenue E and 49th Street. When they approached the car on foot to question the driver, Gayle hit the accelerator and sped off, initiating a police pursuit.
Gayle eventually lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a fire hydrant at the corner of Broadway and 48th Street. The vehicle came to a stop when it ran into the side of the Stat Medical Center building at 989 Broadway.
Gayle then jumped out of the car and led police on a foot chase. He was apprehended a short time later on West 47th Street.
Police found a fraudulent NY State Driver’s License and six, fake Visa credit/debit cards with various identities while conducting a search. Gayle was also found to be wanted on four warrants; two from Union Municipal Court, one from Elizabeth Municipal Court and one out of Maplewood Municipal Court.
Gayle was treated for a minor injury to his hip, which he sustained when he crashed the vehicle.
He was charged with resisting arrest, having fraudulent government documents, credit card theft, eluding police, hindering apprehension, plus the four , outstanding warrants.
