The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is reportedly contemplating potential charges against Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) after a prolonged federal criminal investigation into his interactions with foreign regulators. This information comes from sources familiar with the situation, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The focus of the investigation has been on lavish gifts that Menendez’s wife, Nadine Arslanian, allegedly received from a New Jersey food producer. This producer secured an exclusive contract with the Egyptian government to certify halal food exports worldwide. Notably, Egyptian officials and the New Jersey businessman who obtained the contract were hosted by Menendez in 2018. A year later, this businessman became the sole certifier of halal meat exported from the U.S. to Egypt.

The inquiry is examining whether Menendez might have inappropriately leveraged his role on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to influence this deal. It’s worth noting that this committee oversees approximately $2 billion in U.S. aid to Egypt.

Jennifer Morrill, a spokesperson for Senator Menendez, conveyed to Fox News Digital that the senator remains confident that this matter will be resolved favorably.

The current investigation traces back to at least 2019 when federal investigators searched the New Jersey residence of Wael Hana, an associate of Menendez’s wife. Hana was involved in establishing the halal business that clinched the contract with Egypt.

In April, Menendez set up a legal defense fund to cover significant legal expenses related to this federal criminal investigation. If charged, Menendez, who has been a senator since 2006, could continue his tenure in the Senate. He is slated for re-election in 2024.

This isn’t the first time Menendez has faced legal scrutiny. He was indicted on federal bribery charges in 2016, linked to a Florida eye doctor who made substantial donations to Menendez. However, the DOJ dropped these charges in 2018, and the current investigation is unrelated to that case.
