Severe Weather Warning

Alert: Snowstorm Warning, Emergency Snow Routes To Be In Effect, Discounted Garage Parking, Street Sweeping Update

The National Weather Service is projecting a substantial snowstorm for our region, with snow predicted between approximately Wednesday at 2 pm and Thursday at 11 am. Snow accumulation of 6 to 12 inches, with localized higher amounts are possible.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the City’s Twitter (twitter.com/cityofhoboken) and Facebook (facebook.com/hoboken) or sign up to receive email or text updates by visiting www.hobokennj.gov/alerts. For emergencies, please call the Hoboken Police Department at 201-420-2100.

Parking will be prohibited on Emergency Snow Routes 

Due to the projection of a major snowstorm, emergency snow routes will be in effect. Based on projections from the National Weather Service, the Office of Emergency Management will begin enforcing snow emergency routes as of 2:00 pm on Wednesday, or when roads become snow covered. Parking will not be permitted along emergency snow routes. Vehicles parked on snow emergency routes are subject to towing. This is necessary to move police, fire and ambulances throughout Hoboken in time of emergency for the safety and welfare of all our citizens.

Emergency snow routes in Hoboken are labeled with street signs that read “No Parking When Road Is Snow Covered.” A map of emergency snow routes is available on the City website: www.hobokennj.gov/snow.

The City will provide an update via Nixle on when snow emergency routes will no longer be in effect.

Limit Travel 

If you do not have to travel, stay home and do not drive. If you must travel, use mass transit.

Discounted Garage Parking 

Due to the predicted storm, a special rate of $5 per 24 hour period is being offered in Garages B (28 2nd Street) and D (215 Hudson Street) to residents with a valid Resident On-Street Parking Permit or Temporary Parking Permit, beginning at 2 pm on Wednesday, December 16 through 2 pm on Thursday, December 17. In addition, Hoboken residents with disabilities who possess either a handicapped license plate or hang tag for their permitted vehicle may also park in the Midtown garage (371 4th Street) for the same reduced rate. Garage space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Regular rates apply at other times. Residents who have a valid Resident On-Street Parking Permit or Temporary Parking Permit are reminded that overnight parking (6pm to 8am) is available at a rate of $5.00 in Garages B, D and Midtown every day of the year.

COVID-19 testing centers

As of today, Hoboken’s COVID-19 testing centers will remain open on both Wednesday, December 16 and Thursday, December 17.

Street Cleaning suspended on Wednesday and Thursday

Street cleaning enforcement will be suspended on Wednesday, December 16 and Thursday, December 17. A decision on street cleaning for Friday, December 18 will be made on Thursday. Meters will remain in effect to help facilitate the clearing of parking lanes in commercial districts. All other parking rules and regulations will also remain in effect.

Outdoor dining update

As a reminder to business owners with outdoor cafes, parklets and streateries, all pop-up tents and structures should be broken down and stored securely during snow events. Sidewalk cafes and related equipment (including tables, chairs, railings, umbrellas, awnings, related furniture/equipment) must be removed from the sidewalk. Businesses with parklets are responsible for snow removal operations within four feet adjacent to the parklet in all directions. All propane tanks and heating equipment should be removed from the sidewalk/street.

Keeping Sidewalks Clear 

Property owners/occupants are reminded that they have six (6) hours after the completion of a storm to remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property, along with adjoining wheelchair ramps or curb cuts. Residents are urged to assist elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing snow from their properties. It is illegal to shovel snow back onto streets or onto fire hydrants. The City performs proactive inspections and also relies on citizen complaints to help us identify those property owners that are not meeting sidewalk safety requirements. The vast majority of property owners comply with these regulations, but the City will issue fines to those who do not keep sidewalks clear.

Trash collection

There is no change to the trash collection schedule at this time.

To report an unplowed street, unshoveled sidewalk, or other problem, residents can submit an online complaint via https://www.hobokennj.gov/311 or via the Hoboken 311 mobile application.
