Hoboken Man Arrested for Stealing a Vespa Scooter and Eluding Police

Charges: Eluding, Theft of MC, Six traffic tickets

Incident Date: 07/07/20 1650 hours

Incident Location: initially – 5th and Adams Streets area, arrest 3rd and Harrison Streets

Officers involved: Officers Enrico Gnassi, Harold Milne

Shortly after 450pm on Thursday, July 7th Hoboken Police Officer Gnassi observed a male later identified as Curtis Brown of Hoboken operating a Vespa  illegally. Mr. Brown was driving the Vespa against traffic with no helmet and no visible license plate. Officer Gnassi was able to safely conduct a motor vehicle stop which Mr. Brown originally complied with; however, when Mr. Brown was ordered to turn the Vespa off he fled. Based on Officer Gnassi identifying Mr. Brown as the operator no officers pursued Mr. Brown.  Shortly after this incident Officer Gnassi observed Mr. Brown walking in the area of 3rd and Harrison Street without the Vespa. Officer Gnassi was able to place him under arrest for his actions on the Vespa (Eluding). While processing Mr. Brown at headquarters the owner of the Vespa entered headquarters. At this point, Officer Harold Milne became involved and the investigation continued. Mr. Brown was ultimately charged with stealing the Vespa which was later located and returned to the owner.

Curtis Brown was charged / issued the following:

Charged -Eluding motor vehicle stop, theft of a motor vehicle

Issued – Wrong way down a one way, unclear plates, Motorcycle helmet required, unregistered vehicle, suspended driver license, uninsured vehicle

The charges were placed on a Warrant and after the arrest process was complete he was transported to Hudson County Correctional Facility.
