Mayor Bhalla Encourages Eligible Residents to Pre-Register For Vaccine, Updates on Cases, Hoboken Food Pantry Distribution & CDBG Funding Information

Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla encourages Hoboken residents currently eligible to receive the vaccine to pre-register to receive one through the Hoboken Health Department at Carepoint. Appointments are currently available and being scheduled to receive the Pfizer vaccine. Eligible residents can currently pre-register by visiting http://www.hobokennj.gov/vaccinesignup.

Residents meeting the following criteria, established by the State of New Jersey, are currently eligible:

• Personas mayores de 55 años

Update on COVID-19 cases

From March 8, 2021 – April 6, 2021, the following is a breakdown of new COVID-19 cases:

Age 0-16: 96 (12% of cases)
17-30: 359 (45%)
31-40: 178 (22%)
41-50: 73 (9%)
51-60: 60 (8%)
61-75: 20 (3%)
76+: 6 (1%)

From March 13, 2020 – April 6, 2021, the following is a breakdown of total COVID-19 cases:

Age 0-16: 408 (9% of cases)
17-30: 1,753 (40%)
31-40: 1,072 (24%)
41-50: 491 (11%)
51-60: 274 (6%)
61-75: 269 (6%)
76+: 119 (3%)

The Hoboken Health Department reports approximately 300 children either having been quarantined at some point during March due to exposure to COVID-19 and having ties to a daycare, PreK program, or a school in Hoboken, or having tested positive. Most of the children quarantined in this total was because of exposure to a family member, classmate, or friend who tested positive. The majority of those quarantined due to a potential exposure did not end up contracting the virus. Between March 8 and April 6, 96 children up to age 16 tested positive for COVID-19.

The Hoboken Health Department has worked closely with school administrators in public and private schools, as well as day cares, to quickly isolate children or staff who test positive and quarantine close contacts during the contact tracing process to ensure a safe, in-person learning experience for children.

Hoboken Food Pantry food distribution

The Hoboken Food Pantry is distributing food this Wednesday, April 7th from 10am-12:30pm at the following locations in Hoboken:

1301 Washington (Hoboken Community Center)
124 Grand (Multi Service Center)
311 Harrison Street (HHA Main Campus) **PLEASE NOTE UPDATED LOCATION

Residents can pick up pre-packed grocery bags at any of the locations listed. If you have not registered you can do so at any of our distribution sites and receive a bag of food the same day. The next distribution will take place on Wednesday April 21 from 10:00am-12:30pm.

Special Produce Distribution this Friday

There will be an additional distribution of fresh produce this Friday, April 9 from 10am – 12:30pm at the following three locations:

Family2Family Schedule:

The HFP Family2Family program is available for Hoboken residents in need of any non-food items. Items include (but are not limited to): diapers, wipes, formula, baby food, hygiene items, sanitary supplies, adult diapers, pet food, etc. at 1301 Washington Street (Hoboken Community Center). The next dates for pick up are as follows:

Tuesday, April 13, 9-11am
Tuesday, April 27, 9-11am

CDBG and CDBG-CV funding for community groups

The City of Hoboken will accept applications for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program Year 2021 to provide funding to eligible programs and projects sponsored by public agencies or not-for-profit organizations.  The City encourages local community groups who provide quantifiable benefits to low and moderate-income residents to apply. The CDBG funding is provided through the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The City is hosting a community meeting on Thursday, April 22 at 4:00pm via Zoom to collect input and identify needs relevant to low and moderate-income residents within Program Year 2021. More information on the City’s CDBG program and meeting links for the 4/22 community meeting will be available at: https://www.hobokennj.gov/resources/community-development-block-grant-program.

The City of Hoboken’s 2021 allocation of CDBG funding through HUD totals $1,072,812. Public Service Funding is capped at 15% of total funding, which would make $160,921.80 available to organizations providing services including, but not limited to child care, after school programs, health care, family planning, and assistance to the homeless.  The City’s Public Facility Funding, also through the CDBG Program, would total $911,890.20 which can be allocated for capital improvements benefiting low to moderate income residents.

The City of Hoboken is also accepting applications for CDBG-CV 3 funds, provided through the CARES Act, from organizations providing CDBG-eligible activities that prepare for, prevent, and/or respond to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Approximately $530,000 of the City’s CDBG-CV funding would be available for application, with no cap on the percentage dedicated to Public Service Funding.

Applications for both CDBG and CDBG-CV funds are due by 4:00PM on Monday, May 3, 2021. Funds will become available for the selected applications as early as July 1, 2021.  Since the funding source is limited, this is a competitive application process. The review criteria and eligibility requirements are noted in the application.

The City of Hoboken’s CDBG Program Goals are consistent with its adopted 2020-2024 five-Year Consolidated Plan as well as the National Objectives defined by HUD.
